The piece was inspired by the veil of the subject, with a unique hexagon pattern that I had to explore, trapping the subject in a hexigon border. Hex meaning six, The Lover is the 6th Tarot card, which was a play with the name of the piece. As well, apothecia are black, disc shaped fruiting bodies that appear on some lichens. The black spots on the veil reminded me of them. So too is the title a play on both the hexigons and the black spots.
